Bali Museum is a museum on the history and art of Bali. It is located along Jalan Letkol Wisnu, in the heart of Denpasar, Bali, in the former location of the royal palace of the Kingdom of Badung, which was burned down by the Dutch following the puputan of 1906. It is lauded for having one of the best collections of Balinese art in the world.

Bali Museum was built in 1931 by Dutch architect P.J. Moojen. Within the museum complex are four main pavilions named Tabanan, Buleleng, Karangasem and Timur, each built in the style of the area in Bali from which they derive their name.

Each pavilion showcases a different aspect of Balinese culture and history. The Tabanan pavilion displays theatrical masks, musical instruments and things related to the performing arts. The Karangasem pavilion focuses on fine arts, from sculptures to paintings and wood carvings. The Buleleng pavilion exhibits fabrics, textiles and the art of weaving. The Timur pavilion provides documentation on archaeological discoveries in Bali.

In addition to the main buildings, the grounds of Bali Museum itself is worth exploring. They provide an idea of how the royal palace of Badung would have appeared.

Visiting the Bali Museum

The Bali Museum is open Sundays to Thursdays from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm, and Fridays from 8:00 am to 1:00.
