Balinese Handicrafts
Balinese Handicrafts trace their roots to cottage industries in the production of wood carvings, metalworks, souvenirs and antiques. With worldwide recognition for Balinese culture, the production of handicrafts and art objects have today become a major export industry for Bali.
Where before, Balinese handicrafts are confined to local usage, personal adornment and for religious purposes, today there is a booming industry in Bali, in the production of the stylized Balinese paintings, wood sculpturing, jewellery, textiles, furniture and antiques. The growing expatriate community in Kuta also plays a role in the development of Balinese handicraft, both in their appetite as well as in their demand and taste.
At the same time as Balinese handicrafts are finding a market internationally, Bali itself has become an emporium for the handicrafts and antiques from across the Indonesian archipelago.
