Balinese Woodcarving

Woodcarving is something you can find everywhere in Bali. There is a tradition and sense to decorate that appears to be more intense in Bali than in most other places. As we view the Balinese woodcarvings and their high degree of quality, we are also mindful that Bali is a forested island, and so trees are in abundance. However, the local religion assign anniversaries to trees, revering them with special rituals if any are to be fell.

There are two types of Balinese woodcarving. The first has some religious connection: to create idols, effigies and masks, while the other is to create ornamental and decorative objects. The art movement hatched in the 1930's created a market and demand for Balinese woodcarving, which in turn fueled a cottage industry to do woodcarving for the export market.
The Balinese woodcarving industry is centered on the villages in Central Bali such as Peliatan, Tegallalang and Mas, all withing the Gianyar regency.
