Balinese spas are one of the most prominent features of a visit to Bali. The spas in Bali provide traditional health and beauty treatment using local and natural ingredients found in Indonesia. Spas in Bali are well known, and some of the best can be said to be truly world renowned.
There are spas to match every budget. Of course, the more expensive places are luxurious palaces of self pampering. Nonetheless the smaller salons will still be able to offer a similar range of treatment - perhaps with less frills - and at a fraction of the cost.
Before settling on a spa, it is wise to shop around. Most of the resorts in Nusa Dua have their own in-house spas. There's quite a selection to choose from in Bali. Most spa resorts offer a combination package, allowing you to try out their range of treatments. These are quite useful for first-timers.
Selecting a Spa
One of the first spas to be established in Bali is the Nusa Dua Spa, attached to the Nusa Dua Beach Hotel. It is today still one of the biggest spas in Bali. It offers beauty treatments and massages in private rooms, while hotel guests may opt for the treatments in the comfort of their hotel rooms. You can choose both Eastern and Western treatments here.
If you prefer a French-style spa, head to Thalasso at Grand Mirage Resort. The spa here makes use of natural sea water in its therapies.

There are two Four Seasons Resorts in Bali, one in Jimbaran and one in Sayan, Ubud. Both offer luxurious spa experiences. The resort in Jimbaran is a multi-million-dollar facility offering local and Western treatments. You can choose to be pampered in private rooms or in any of its outdoor settings. Natural local remedies, called jamu, is prepared using local recipes.
The spa at Four Seasons Resorts in Sayan takes on a different style, offering modern and air-conditioned comfort.
The Tjampuhan Hotel and Spa is small in size, but is located in a most unusual setting. The spa is situated in a cave carved out beside a river that flows through Ubud. The surroundings are lush and features ornately carved stones that add to the Balinese flavor.
Also located in a beautiful outdoor setting is the spa at Bali Hyatt in Sanur. It offers a full range of traditional Balinese treatments.
The spa at Bali Inter-Continental Resort in Jimbaran is also recommendable. It offers Eastern and Western massages and spa products in its beautifully appointed private rooms.
The internationally renowned Mandara Spa chain manages some of the best spas in Bali. Their facilities are available at Hotel Padma, Novotel Lombok, The Alila and The Legian. All offer a full range of scrubs and aromatherapy oils. Their signature treatment is performed by two masseuses working together.
If you prefer a privately-run spa, check out Bodyworks in Seminyak and Peti Tenget. Its treatments include everything from hair coloring to manicures, pedicures and facials.
Nur Salon is one of the first salons in Ubud, and is still one of the less expensive spa options.
Another reasonably priced spa facility is Bali Hati, which also has stream room and outdoor jacuzzi. A uniqueness of Bali Hati is that profits from this facility are channeled towards charitable works in Bali.
