Having said that, you can easily rent a car or motorcycle to roam around the island. A Toyota Avanza will cost you around Rp. 150,000 to Rp. 170,000 a day. On the other hand, an old Suzuki Jimny will rent for Rp. 90,000 to Rp. 110,000 a day. Be sure you have an International Driving Permit, obtainable in your home country before you leave for your vacation. It will save you the tedious task of applying for a permit in Bali.
You can also consider renting the car online, saving you the hassle of having to deal with touts.
In Bali, as in the rest of Indonesia, driving is on the left hand side, the same as Australia and Britain. If you rent a motorcycle, be sure the helmet is provided. Wear it to ensure your brains don't spill out.
If you prefer to rent a car with driver - not a bad idea if you are unfamiliar with the roads - you can get drivers with passable standing of spoken English who double as informal tour guides. Ask your hotel to recommend. Prices vary between Rp. 300,000 to 600,000 a day.
