Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK), Bali
Garuda Wisnu Kencana or GWK is a cultural park in Bukit Peninsula, Bali. It translate as the Garuda Vishnu Park. Its centerpiece is a mammoth statue of the mythological bird Garuda and the Hindu god Vishnu. The statue was planned to be 146 meters tall, making it much taller than New York City's Statue of Liberty.
The Garuda Wishnu Kencana has attracted much controversy and concern over its impact on the landscape. The religious authorities on the island were also concerned that the statue will disrupt the spiritual balance of the island. So now the statue of Vishnu at the park stands at only 23 meters tall, and is only completed to the torso. It was also originally planned to be gilded, but this was not carried out.
