Gunung Agung is the tallest mountain in Bali. It is a stratovolcano that reaches a height of 3,142 meters (10,308 feet). This active volcano is a sacred site for the Balinese who regard it their response to Mount Meru, the mythical center of the universe in Hindu cosmology. As a measure of its importance, the most important temple on Bali, Pura Besakih, sits high on its slopes.

Gunung Agung last erupted in 1964. Today it is still regarded as active, and occasionally belches smoke and ash.
