Jalan Gajah Mada is one of the main thoroughfares of Denpasar. It is located right at the heart of the city, stretching from the Catur Muka statue to Jalan Dr. Wahidin.

As the main commercial street of the city, Jalan Gajah Mada has a mixed ranged of businesses along it. You can find here Chinese apothecaries, Arab and Indian traders along with fashion houses and jewelry stores. The office of the Mayor of Denpasar is also on Jalan Gajah Mada.

The name Gajah Mada translates as the "elephant general", and refers to a legendery prime minister of Java under the Majapahit Empire. Although no much facts is known about him, he is believed to have lived in the 14th century, during the rule of the Majapahit king Jayanegara (reign 1309-1328).

Gajah Mada is credited with bringing the Majapahit Empire to its pinnacle of glory. As a national hero, Gajah Mada today has its name used in many institutions and roads across Indonesia.
