Shoppers in Bali are truly spoilt for choice: there's an unending array of local and Western goods to buy here. On this page, I provide a recommended list of items that would be on your shopping list, and suggest some shops where you can get them.

The village in Bali specializing in basketware is Tenganan. The baskets here are intricately woven of rattan. Due to the painstaking nature of the work, prices can be quite high.

Clothes

Most of the fashionable clothing stores are located along Jalan Legian in Kuta. You can find here boutiques as well as international designer labels, with prices to match.
  • Billabong
Beach apparel as well as clothing for young people. Shop along Jalan Legian in Kuta. Outlets at Jalan Legian, Kuta Square, Nusa Dua and Discovery Shopping Mall. www.billabong.com

  • Body & Soul Clothing
Clothing store with outlets in Bali as well as Medan, Jakarta, Jogyakarta, Surabaya, Semarang, Makassar, Manado and even Perth. www.bodyandsoulclothing.com

  • Kuta Kidz
Clothing for infants and children. http://kutakidz88.com

  • Paul Ropp
Boutique with branches in Jimbaran, Kuta Galeria, Seminyak, Oberoi, Kerobokan, Ubud, Galeria Bali. www.paulropp.com

  • Rascals
Despite the store name, this is a specialty store selling traditional batik as well as children's clothing. Located at Kuta Square, Jalan Legian.

  • Surfer Girl
Apparel for teenage girls. Outlet at Jalan Legian. http://id.surfer-girl.com

Furniture

Bali is a great place to shop for "instant antiques". When buying furniture, make sure that they are made from sustainably timbered wood. Another thing to note is the difference humidity level between tropical Bali and the climate back home: changes in moisture may cause the wood to crack.

The place to look for furniture in Bali is the village of Seminyak.

Gold Jewelry

  • Jalan Hasanudin
That's the road in Denpasar where you can find a good number of gold jewelry shops.

Leather Goods

  • Jalan Padma
Road off Jalan Legian in Kuta where you can find shops selling leather goods.

Paintings

Ubud is the center to find paintings, from oil paintings to watercolors to charcoal sketches. There are many galleries lining the streets of Ubud, and it is up to you to explore them.

Pottery

Lombok to the east of Bali is the main center for pottery making. If you can go there, try Jenggala Keramik in Jimbaran. It has a range of potteries, stoneware and porcelain.

Puppets

There are two types of puppets: the three-dimensional ones used in wayang golek and the two-dimensional ones used in wayang kulit. To find these puppets, go to the art market (Pasar Seni) in Sukawati. Among the shops here specializing in puppets are Wayan Mardika and Wayan Narta. If you are interested in animal puppets, go to Wayan Wija shop in Peliatan.

Silver Jewelry

Two two places specializing in silver jewelry in Bali are the villages of Celuk and Tejakula. But if your trip is confined to South and Central Bali, here are some shops to visit:

  • Jonathan SilverSilver jewelry. Outlet at Jalan Legian, Kuta.

  • Suarti
Maker of sterling silver jewelry. www.suarti.com

  • Talismans of Power
    Silver jewelry shop in Seminyak.

  • Yusuf Silver
Manufacturer and exporter of silver jewelry since 1975. Outlet at Jalan Legian, Kuta. www.yusufsilver.com

Stone Carvings

The main village specializing in stone carving is Batubulan and the villages in the surroundings of Singapadu. If you can't go far to shop, head to Jimbaran Gallery, a gallery specializing in stone carvings in Jimbaran.

Wood Carvings

The village specializing in woodcarving is Mas. It is not the only one. Other villages with a thriving woodcarving cottage industry includes Kemenuh, Sukawati, Tegallalang and Nyuh Kuning near Padangtegal.
